Art Therapy

Art therapy is used to communicate feelings in a counseling type of setting to treat issues such as loss, grief, and anger. These one-to-one sessions are provided by art therapy practicum students from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute.

Who it's for: Individuals including children over 5, youth and adults (by appointments only)

When: Fridays

Counseling

Counseling is provided by practicum students training to become professional clinical counselors.

Who it's for: Individuals including children over 5, youth, and adults (by appointments only)

When: Wednesdays and Fridays

Where: Little Mountain Neighbourhood House

Cost: Free

Who to contact: To make an appointment, call Family Support Worker, Melissa at 604.879.7104 ext 304. The referral will be passed along to the counselor who will contact you when a space becomes available.

Free Family Drop-Ins

Come relax with your child at our two family drop-in locations! Parents/caregivers and their children under 6 can meet new friends, play, and sing together.  Where: Little Mountain Neighbourhood House (3981 Main St)

When: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 10:00am-12:00pm

Saturday sessions start Sept 18th, 2010.

Where: Gray's Park (E33rd Ave. and Saint Catharines' St.)

When: Mondays and Wednesdays 10:00am-12:00pm

Hot lunches are available every Wednesday at Gray’s Park.

Where: Livingstone Elementary (315 E23rd Ave)

When: Fridays 9:00am-11:00am, starting Sept 24th, 2010

Family Support Worker

LMNH's Family Support Worker, Melissa Yeung, is available to provide one-on-one support and referrals to parents who are facing parenting, financial, housing, and/or other life challenges. If you or your family need extra support, please don't hesitate to call 604-879-7104 ext 304. Services are free of charge. Drop-ins are welcomed!

Mother Goose

Learn songs, rhymes, and storied to tell your baby and stimulate your baby's early language development.  We have Mother Goose classes for both infants and toddlers!

Nobody's Perfect

This 6 week parenting workshop will help you and your children to handle some of the changes you are facing such as:

  • Learning about children’s mind and feelings
  • Sharing health problems
  • Discussing behavior and child safety
  • Sharing life skills, activities and crafts
  • Finding together supports

Available in English, Vietnamese, Cantonese and Spanish.

Parenting Workshops

Every season, Little Mountain Neighbourhood House offers parenting workshops to educate parents about common parenting challenges and to equip parents with tools to better respond to their children. This fall, we have arranged two workshops that target key challenges in parenting: stress and anger. 

 

How to Manage Your Stress and Your Children's Stress

Over the course of two sessions, parents will explore and identify their own stressors and learn how to cope with them.  Parents will also look at children’s stress and how to help them develop coping skills as well as maintain healthy self esteem.
When: Nov 12th & 19th Fridays, 10:00am-12:00pm

Understanding Anger: Ours and Theirs

Come join us as we dispel myths about anger and help parents develop different techniques to better address their anger. Parents will also learn ways to teach their children about anger and how to deal with it more effectively.

Ready, Set, Learn

This free drop-in introductory preschool program will get our child ready for Kindergarten! Children will learn new skills, make friends, and become more comfortable with a school environment.

Single Mom's Support Group

Join Little Mountain in partnership with the YWCA for our weekly Single Mothers' Support Group to help build support networks and to be part of a community of single moms in your neighbourhood. Together with other single moms you can find companionship and increase your knowledge of community resources that are so important to shaping your success, happiness and perspective on life.

Strong Start at McKenzie Elementary School

If you are a parent or caregiver of a preschooler, come join our Strong Start progrem at McKenzie! This free drop-in program offers a supportive and fun environment for parents and kids to learn new skills and meet new friends! The program will:

  • Help your child become ready for kindergarten.
  • Help you and your child become comfortable with the school.
  • Help your child develop confidence and relationships with friends.
  • Teach your child some important skills they need to succeed in school

Who it's for: Parents/caregivers with children 0-5 years old

When: Monday - Friday from 9:00-11:30am, September 20th - June 23rd, 2011
