Art Therapy and Expressive Art Therapy

The art therapy program at the Neighborhood House provides a safe non-judgmental space for creativity and self expression. Often thoughts or feelings can be difficult to communicate with words alone, which is why acting and creating art can be useful tools for self exploration.  The art therapy is facilitated by our pracitucm student, Elisha.

Elisha is studying to become an Art Therapist at the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute.  Elisha uses simple materials such as paints, pastels, pencils and clay encourage expression for growth, healing or better understanding of one’s self.

Who it's for: Individual support for children, youths, adults, and seniors

When: Fridays from 9:30am to 5:00pm

Cost: FREE

Services will be provided by appointment basis only.  For more information or to set up an appointment, please contact Melissa Yeung, the Family Support Worker, at 604-879-7104. The referral will be passed along to the practicum student who will contact you when a space becomes available.

Counseling

Little Mountain Neighbourhood House’s Family Support Program is pleased to offer free counseling services to members of our community.  This service will be provided by two students, Emily and Kit, who are currently completing their Masters of Counseling Psychology degree.

Emily has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University and has over three years of experience working as the manager of a Naturopathic medical clinic. Her main interest lies in anxiety, depression and disordered eating. Emily will also be completing a second internship at the French speaking school Gabrielle Roy in Surrey.

Kit is has a diverse volunteer and work experience working with different ethnicities in Vancouver, Toronto, and Hong Kong.  Kit’s ultimate goal is to become a family therapist and a grief counselor.

When: Tuesdays 1:30pm to 6:00pm & Wednesdays 9:00am to 4:30pm

Free Family Drop-Ins

Come relax with your child at our two family drop-in locations! Parents/caregivers and their children under 6 can meet new friends, play, and sing together.

Where: Gray's Park (E33rd Ave. and Saint Catharines' St.)
When: Mondays and Wednesdays 10:00am-12:00pm

Family Support Worker

LMNH's Family Support Worker, Melissa Yeung, is available to provide one-on-one support and referrals to parents who are facing parenting, financial, housing, and/or other life challenges. If you or your family need extra support, please don't hesitate to call 604-879-7104 ext 304. Services are free of charge. Drop-ins are welcomed!

Mother Goose

Learn songs, rhymes, and storied to tell your baby and stimulate your baby's early language development.  We have Mother Goose classes for both infants and toddlers!

Nobody's Perfect

This 6 week parenting workshop will help you and your children to handle some of the changes you are facing such as:

  • Learning about children’s mind and feelings
  • Sharing health problems
  • Discussing behavior and child safety
  • Sharing life skills, activities and crafts
  • Finding together supports

Available in English, Vietnamese, Cantonese and Spanish.

Parenting Workshops

Every season, Little Mountain Neighbourhood House offers parenting workshops to educate parents about common parenting challenges and to equip parents with tools to better respond to their children. This fall, we have arranged three workshops that target key challenges in parenting.


Legal Services Society Workshop

The Legal Services Society will be facilitating a 2 hour workshop to provide families with information about the services that they offer and to briefly answer questions pertaining to child custody.  Spaces are very limited and registration is required.  

Who it’s for: Parents and Caregivers who are facing difficulties with child custody

When: Tuesday, October 25th from 12:30pm to 2:30pm

Setting Limits

Over the course of two sessions,  we will explore ways to set reasonable limits, send clear messages, inspire cooperation, and teach decision making and problem solving skills.

Who is it for: Parents of children aged 11 to 17

Communication Skills

Join us for a two part workshop where parents will be encouraged to explore different communication styles and the impact they have on children.  Parents will also identify communication styles that can help strengthen the parent/child bond.

Single Mom's Support Group

Join Little Mountain in partnership with the YWCA for our weekly Single Mothers' Support Group to help build support networks and to be part of a community of single moms in your neighbourhood. Together with other single moms you can find companionship and increase your knowledge of community resources that are so important to shaping your success, happiness and perspective on life.

Strong Start at McKenzie Elementary School

If you are a parent or caregiver of a preschooler, come join our Strong Start progrem at McKenzie! This free drop-in program offers a supportive and fun environment for parents and kids to learn new skills and meet new friends! The program will:

  • Help your child become ready for kindergarten.
  • Help you and your child become comfortable with the school.
  • Help your child develop confidence and relationships with friends.
  • Teach your child some important skills they need to succeed in school

Who it's for: Parents/caregivers with children 0-3 years old Wednesdays and Fridays, and with children 3-5 years on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
