Job Description

The Volunteer and Communications Coordinator is an exciting new role at Little Mountain Neighbourhood House that will be responsible for the overall development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of our volunteer and communications strategies. Working with the Management team, the Volunteer and Communications Coordinator, will support the creation of an effective and responsive community engagement framework, to further enhance the visibility of our House, increase community awareness and expand our reach. The Volunteer and Communications Coordinator plays a key role in supporting our programs and services to realize anticipated goals in meaningful and sustainable ways.

The Volunteer and Communications Coordinator will be an energetic, creative and collaborative individual seeking to make a difference in the community. We are a busy, diverse, community driven organization comprising 5 key service areas: Childcare; Family Resources and Community; Seniors; Settlement; Children and Youth, with over 80 regular team members, located at 25 sites across our catchment area.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages the volunteer life cycle with a focus on volunteer recruitment, placement, retention, training and satisfaction. Develops the annual strategy for volunteer recognition.

  • Receives, responds to or refers inquiries or concerns from volunteers (or volunteer applicants); liaises with appropriate department representatives and subject matter experts on community challenges and opportunities; prepares correspondence and response strategies.

  • Supports and facilitates the development of volunteer committees (i.e. events, etc.)

  • Develops, implements and analyzes the results of the annual volunteer survey.
  • Develops and completes all relevant reporting and record-keeping requirements, for volunteers and practicum students.

  • Develops an annual Impact Report for key stakeholders.
Communications Coordination
  • Maintains LMNH’s website and social media platforms with relevant information of its programs, services and community key information.

  • Coordinates community/media outreach for LMNHS events.
  • Participates in the development of the communications plan to improve LMNH’s visibility and reach in the community.

  • Creates and implements standardized documents and templates, including program guides, templates for posters, presentation decks, annual report, briefing notes, newsletters, news releases and other writing projects as required, and oversees the production of these products.

Qualifications and Skills
  • 2+ years of experience supporting all aspects of volunteers’ coordination and organizational communications skills or related relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, fundraising software, Social Media platforms, Photoshop, Canva, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.

  • Experience developing online and print newsletters, print ads, and other forms of online and print communications tools.

  • Demonstrated researching and writing abilities.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related discipline (volunteer/non-profit management, event management, journalism, PR, marketing, communications, etc.) or commensurable experience.

  • Comfort working within tight deadlines and with great attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of graphic design fundamentals and creating communications products suitable for both print and electronic environments for diverse audiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively and manage multiple tasks.

  • Ability to respect and work with a diverse range of employees, participants and community members including children, youth, adults and families of all races, religions, cultures, sexual orientations, statuses, abilities and economic levels.

Working Conditions
  • Ability to work flexible hours to occasionally accommodate special events, training provision, on-boarding, etc. (i.e. weekend trainings, annual community events, neighbourhood house special events, etc.).

Direct Reports
  • Co-op and Practicum Placements.
  • Project specific consultants / contractors.
Salary and Anticipated Start Date
  • $25-$30 per hour, 35 hours per week, 100% employer paid benefits after 6 months and successful completion of probation period.

  • Start date: Monday June 5th, 2023.
